Lone Star College Trustees Adopt a Slightly Lower Tax Rate of 10.58 Cents for 2026-27, With a $577.5 Million Budget

Lone Star College System trustees unanimously adopted a tax rate of $0.1058 per $100 of valuation for fiscal year 2026-27 at their October 1 meeting, Community Impact reported. That is a decrease of two hundredths of a cent from the current rate of $0.106. This was a final adoption, not a proposed rate.

The adopted rate splits into $0.0839 for maintenance and operations and $0.0219 for interest and sinking, the portion that services debt. Trustees adopted the rate alongside a $577.5 million budget for the year.

What it means for a given property owner depends on where the property sits. Community Impact reported that taxpayers in the Harris Central Appraisal District are expected to see a drop in the college system portion of their bill, while taxpayers in the Montgomery and San Jacinto county appraisal districts may see a higher college bill because median property values in those districts rose.

This is a Lake Houston area story because the college system’s taxing district takes in Harris County, so property owners in Humble, Kingwood, Atascocita and the surrounding area pay this rate. Lone Star College-Kingwood and the system’s Atascocita center both serve students from this area, and Lake Houston Today has previously covered the system’s plan to retire $404 million in bond debt by 2030-31.
