Mayday Fairs, a Porter based nonprofit that supports firefighters and their families through serious hardship, will hold the Mayday Book Fair on Friday, October 17, from 4 to 8 p.m. at J&Co Vintage Market, 20360 FM 1314 in Porter. Admission is free.
The event includes vendors, a book swap, a silent auction, books for sale and a raffle for a new Kindle. Proceeds go to the family of Jesse Castillo, a firefighter who recently died of stage 4 lung cancer. Heather Probst, one of the organization’s founders, said in an October 1 email that “items at the Mayday Fair booth and silent auction items will directly benefit the family.”
Mayday Fairs launched in August 2026 and was founded by Maxine Cruz and Heather Probst. It serves Harris and Montgomery counties, the two counties that take in the Lake Houston area, though the reporting does not name the specific fire departments it works with. Porter sits just north of the Lake Houston area, inside the New Caney ISD footprint that serves part of this coverage area, which puts the book fair within a short drive of Kingwood, Humble and Atascocita.
