Lake Houston Dredging District Board Works on Funding as Rep. Cunningham Sets January Deadline for a Cost Estimate

The new Lake Houston Dredging District board has split into committees and started outlining a business plan and funding strategy, ReduceFlooding reports, but no dredging has begun. At the board’s latest meeting, State Rep. Charles Cunningham said he needs a cost estimate for any legislative funding request by January 14, 2027, and Houston District E Council Member Fred Flickinger offered start-up seed money from his council district service funds.

According to the report, a state appropriation would likely not be final until September 2027. The board is still working out how much sediment to remove, what it will cost and how much selling the sand could offset. The report says sustained dredging on Lake Houston could reduce flood risk for Kingwood, Humble and Atascocita.
