Texas Comptroller Asks Lawmakers to Double Education Freedom Account Funding to $2 Billion

The Texas comptroller’s office is asking the Legislature to raise funding for the Texas Education Freedom Accounts program from $1 billion in the current budget to $2 billion for the 2028-29 biennium, Community Impact reported. The program sends state money to families for private school tuition, homeschooling and related education costs, with priority for students with disabilities and students from low income households.

About 110,000 students take part now and more than 106,000 are on a waitlist, according to the report, and roughly 44,000 families have expressed interest for the 2027-28 school year. A legislative budget hearing on the appropriations request is set for Wednesday, September 9 at the Texas Capitol.
