Harris County Registrations Are Caught in a State DPS Failure 10 Days Before the October 5 Deadline

A failure at the Texas Department of Public Safety left voter registration applications and updates submitted through the state’s online driver’s license portal sitting unsent to county election officials, in some cases since October 2025. Houston Public Media reported Friday that about 75,000 Harris County registrations were caught in the backlog, citing county officials. The October 5 deadline to register for the November 3 election is ten days away.

What the State Has Said

DPS has said the system issue has been resolved but has not explained what caused it, according to the Texas Tribune. The state began delivering the unsent registrations to county officials on Tuesday night, and counties around Texas are bringing on temporary workers to clear the volume. Chris McGinn, executive director of the Texas Association of County Election Officials, told the Tribune that a firm statewide count is not possible because the numbers keep rising as records arrive.

Figures reported for individual counties vary as the backlog is processed, and no settled statewide total has been published. Collin County has received more than 40,000 records and Travis County about 32,000.

What It Means for Lake Houston Area Voters

Anyone who registered or updated their registration at a DPS office or through the department’s online portal since last October should confirm the record actually reached Harris County. Voters can check their status through the Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector’s voter registration lookup, which is the office that maintains the county roll.

Votebeat reports that a voter who registered on time but does not appear on the rolls can cast a provisional ballot, which is counted once officials confirm the DPS registration was submitted before the deadline. That is a remedy, not a substitute for checking now: the October 5 deadline still governs, and a registration that was never submitted cannot be rescued by a provisional ballot.

This is a separate problem from the roughly 300,000 Harris County registrations on the suspense list, which Lake Houston Today covered on September 22. A suspense record is usually an address mismatch. This backlog is a transmission failure at the state level.
