Harris County Commissioners Court had about $15.1 million in general fund money that had not been assigned to any specific program when budget work began on September 8, and commissioners directed roughly $14.7 million of it over the next nine days, KPRC 2 reports.
The largest pieces went to eviction defense and rental assistance at $2.7 million, pretrial services at $2.5 million, the county’s HART behavioral health response team at $1.5 million, the Harris Center at $1.4 million and the county public library system at $1.4 million. Domestic violence prevention and the county courts received $1 million each. Smaller amounts went to community safety functions at about $594,000, wastewater surveillance at public health and pollution control at about $500,000 each, the RISE violence interruption program at $400,000, election trainers at $190,000, the Children’s Assessment Center at $164,000 and veterans services at $107,000.
These are countywide services. Atascocita, Huffman, Summerwood and Fall Creek sit in unincorporated Harris County and are served directly by county agencies, and Kingwood residents pay the county rate alongside the city of Houston rate. The allocations sit inside the 2026-27 budget commissioners adopted on September 17, covered here in our report on the budget and tax rate and our report on the $3 million community safety commitment.
