What Harris County Homeowners Can Do About Their Tax Bill After the Rate Increase

With the Harris County tax rate going up for 2026-27, KPRC 2 has put together a rundown of what homeowners can still do to hold their bills down.

The piece covers the homestead exemption for a primary residence, the additional exemption available to homeowners 65 and older, and the disability exemption, which school districts must offer at a minimum of $10,000 and which cannot be combined with the over 65 exemption. It notes that Harris County offers an optional homestead exemption of 20 percent. It also advises homeowners to gather records on their home’s layout, condition and improvements, along with comparable nearby properties, before the next protest period, so a valuation they believe is wrong can be challenged with evidence in hand.

The article does not carry application or protest deadlines. Homeowners in Humble, Kingwood, Atascocita, Huffman, Summerwood and Fall Creek file exemptions and protests through the Harris County Appraisal District, and the county rate is one line on a bill that also carries school district, city and municipal utility district rates. Our coverage of the rate itself is here.
