Harris County Commissioners Delayed Action on Flock Cameras Thursday and Voted to Form an Oversight Committee

Harris County Commissioners Court voted Thursday to delay broad action on the county’s Flock license plate reading cameras and to form an oversight committee instead, FOX 26 Houston reported. The vote came the same day a county report found that Harris County has no complete verified inventory of the cameras and no comprehensive list of the outside agencies able to reach their data.

The court did not cancel the camera contracts or adopt a countywide usage policy on Thursday. FOX 26 Houston reported that commissioners chose to stand up a committee to take up the question rather than act on the cameras themselves at that meeting. The station’s report does not give a vote count or name the members of the committee.

This is the next step in a matter Lake Houston Today has been following. The report that prompted Thursday’s discussion counted 154 county funded Flock camera systems plus 17 additional Sheriff’s Office networks, and found that only four county agencies had supplied written policies governing their use. Earlier this month, Precinct 4, which covers Atascocita, Huffman and much of the unincorporated Lake Houston area, took its 61 Flock cameras offline.
