Harris County Precinct 4 Commissioner Lesley Briones has spent about $223,000 in county money on billboards since January 2024, including roughly $100,000 in 2024 alone, ABC13 Houston reported Thursday, while the station reported each of the other three commissioners spent under $1,200 over the same period. Briones’ office told ABC13 the billboards were a hurricane preparedness campaign and that keeping residents informed and prepared is non-negotiable in the fastest growing part of the county, and a legal expert interviewed by the station said the spending was within the discretion commissioners hold over their own office budgets.
The billboards were paid for through the county’s advertising contract, funded by the countywide budget that Lake Houston area property owners pay into on their Harris County tax bill.
