Houston Resumes Water Shutoffs for About 15,000 Delinquent Accounts

The City of Houston began disconnecting water service on Tuesday for customers who are more than 90 days behind and owe more than $500, with nearly 15,000 accounts affected and about $30 million owed to the city, ABC13 Houston reported. Mayor John Whitmire said the effort is about maintaining a fair and sustainable utility system and being fair to residents who pay on time.

Shutoffs had been suspended for roughly two years while the city worked through faulty meters and billing errors, which officials say have been resolved. The city says customers who want to dispute an account, set up a payment plan or ask about assistance programs can call 713-371-1400.

Kingwood, Summerwood and Fall Creek sit inside Houston city limits, so city water customers in those neighborhoods fall under the policy.
