Both area lakes read normal on Saturday evening, September 19, and no flood watches, warnings or advisories were in effect for Harris, Montgomery or Liberty counties at publication. The one figure worth a reader’s attention is Sunday’s heat index, which the National Weather Service puts as high as 104 degrees.
Lake Levels at a Glance
| Lake | Level | Percent Full | Reading |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lake Houston | 42.32 feet | 100.0 percent | 5:30 p.m. Central, Saturday, September 19 |
| Lake Conroe | 199.79 feet | 94.3 percent | Daily value for Saturday, September 19 |
Lake Houston
The U.S. Geological Survey gauge at Lk Houston nr Sheldon, TX, site number 08072000, read 42.32 feet at 5:30 p.m. Central on Saturday, September 19. Over the previous 48 hours the gauge ran between 42.31 feet, recorded at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, and 42.45 feet, recorded at 4:15 a.m. Friday. That is a range of about an inch and a half across two days, which is ordinary movement for a lake held at its conservation level.
The Texas Water Development Board lists Lake Houston at 100.0 percent of conservation capacity for September 19, with its own once-daily reading of 42.38 feet. The small gap between the two agencies is normal and reflects different reading times rather than a disagreement about the lake.
Lake Conroe
The Texas Water Development Board daily value for Lake Conroe on September 19 is 199.79 feet and 94.3 percent full, down 0.02 feet from 199.81 feet on September 18. The level has declined every day since September 7, when it read 200.00 feet, for a total drop of 0.21 feet over twelve days. This is a once-daily figure rather than an intraday reading.
Lake Conroe matters in a Lake Houston paper because San Jacinto River Authority releases from Lake Conroe flow down the West Fork of the San Jacinto River into Lake Houston. The level upstream is part of the local flooding picture in Kingwood, Humble and Atascocita, which is why this page carries both lakes rather than one.
Weather
Tonight. Mostly clear, with a low around 74 degrees. Southeast wind 0 to 5 miles per hour. Chance of precipitation 1 percent.
Sunday. Mostly sunny, with a high near 96 degrees falling to around 92 in the afternoon. Heat index values as high as 104 degrees. East wind 0 to 5 miles per hour. Chance of precipitation 9 percent.
Sunday night. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 75 degrees. Southeast wind 0 to 5 miles per hour. Chance of precipitation 1 percent.
The forecast is from the National Weather Service Houston/Galveston office for the Kingwood grid point and was last updated at 1:21 p.m. Central on Saturday.
Weather Alerts
None. There were no active watches, warnings or advisories for Harris, Montgomery or Liberty counties at read time. Eight alerts were active elsewhere in Texas, none of them inside the Lake Houston coverage area. The 90-day burn ban for unincorporated Harris County remains in effect; it is a fire measure tied to dry conditions, not a water measure. See our report on the burn ban for the terms.
