Good morning. This is the Sunday, September 27 lake levels and weather report for the Lake Houston area. There are no flood watches, flood warnings or flash flood warnings in effect for Harris, Montgomery or Liberty counties. Both lakes are sitting in their normal ranges and both continued to ease down overnight. One air quality alert is active for Harris County, and it is covered below.
Lake levels at a glance
| Lake | Level | Percent full | Reading |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lake Houston | 42.25 feet | 98.8 percent | 5:30 a.m. Central, Sunday, September 27 |
| Lake Conroe | 199.60 feet | 93.5 percent | Daily value, Sunday, September 27 |
Lake Houston
The United States Geological Survey gauge at Lk Houston nr Sheldon, TX, site number 08072000, read 42.25 feet at 5:30 a.m. Central on Sunday, September 27.
Across the last 48 hours the gauge recorded 190 readings inside a band of one tenth of a foot. The high was 42.30 feet at 10:15 a.m. Friday and the low was 42.20 feet at 5:30 p.m. Saturday. This morning’s reading of 42.25 feet sits in the middle of that band, which means the lake ticked back up overnight after Saturday evening’s low rather than continuing to fall.
The Texas Water Development Board lists Lake Houston at 42.24 feet and 98.8 percent full for Sunday. That is one hundredth of a foot below the USGS reading, which is the kind of agreement to expect between a single daily number and a gauge that reports every 15 minutes. The two services were five hundredths apart on Saturday evening, so this is the closer of the two comparisons.
Lake Conroe
The Texas Water Development Board lists Lake Conroe at 199.60 feet and 93.5 percent full in its daily value for Sunday, September 27. That is down two hundredths of a foot from 199.62 feet on Saturday, and percent full is unchanged from Saturday at 93.5. Lake Conroe has now declined every day for more than a week, from 93.8 percent full on Thursday to 93.5 percent this morning.
Lake Conroe matters in a Lake Houston paper because San Jacinto River Authority releases from Lake Conroe flow down the West Fork of the San Jacinto River into Lake Houston. The upstream level is part of the local flooding picture in Kingwood, Humble and Atascocita, which is why this report carries both lakes rather than one.
The forecast
Today: Mostly sunny, with a high near 93. East wind 0 to 5 mph. Chance of precipitation 9 percent. No heat index value was published for this cycle.
Tonight: Partly cloudy, with a low around 73. Southeast wind 0 to 5 mph. Chance of precipitation 2 percent.
Monday: Sunny, with a high near 93 and temperatures falling to around 90 in the afternoon. East wind 0 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation 11 percent.
Active weather alerts
No flood watches, flood warnings or flash flood warnings are active for Harris, Montgomery or Liberty counties.
One alert does match the coverage area. The National Weather Service Houston/Galveston office issued an Air Quality Alert for Harris County at 3:47 p.m. Saturday, carrying a Texas Commission on Environmental Quality Ozone Action Day for the Houston, Galveston and Brazoria area for today, Sunday, September 27. TCEQ says atmospheric conditions are favorable for high ozone levels, and it asks residents to share a ride, walk, bike, avoid drive through lanes and conserve energy. The alert runs through 8 p.m. Sunday. Nothing is active for Montgomery or Liberty counties.
Three alerts were active statewide at the time of this report. The only flood related one is a Flood Watch from the El Paso office, far outside this area.
