Houston City Council Member Alejandra Salinas has proposed amending the city’s tax abatement rules to attach wage and benefit conditions to the breaks, including higher minimum wage floors tied to city wages, prevailing wages and workers’ compensation for construction workers, health insurance for project employees, a stronger apprenticeship requirement, and the exclusion of contractors with documented wage theft or OSHA violations, ABC13 Houston reported Thursday. The council has not voted on the proposal, which the station reported is expected to come to a vote later in October.
Kingwood sits inside Houston city limits, so the rules the council sets for city tax abatements apply to development in the Lake Houston area.
