Houston Public Media reported on October 9 that police records it obtained through a public records request detail more than 100 interactions between the Houston Police Department and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement from April through June. The reporting is by Dominic Anthony Walsh.
The records follow an ordinance that the Houston City Council and Mayor John Whitmire approved in April, intended to limit cooperation between HPD and ICE. City officials later walked that policy back, according to the outlet, though a requirement that HPD file quarterly reports on its interactions with ICE survived, and it is those quarterly records at issue. Council member Alejandra Salinas, who led the ordinance, told Houston Public Media she has raised concerns with Chief Noe Diaz and the administration and will keep pressing for answers. Representatives for HPD, ICE and the mayor’s office did not respond to the outlet’s requests for comment.
Kingwood sits inside Houston city limits, so HPD is the police department for part of the Lake Houston area and council votes on its policies are local news here.
