Houston City Council is scheduled to vote Wednesday, September 16, on a $6.7 million contract renewal that would fund home-delivered meals and medical transportation for seniors through September 2027, KPRC 2 reports. Nothing has been approved yet.
KPRC 2 reports the contract covers nine service providers, among them BakerRipley, Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston, the Salvation Army, Northwest Assistance Ministries, the Evelyn Rubenstein Jewish Community Center and Baytown Meals on Wheels. Baytown Meals on Wheels alone serves 320 seniors, and the organization told the station services may stop if the funding is not renewed. KPRC 2 describes the programs as reaching thousands of seniors across the greater Houston area but does not give a total.
Kingwood sits inside Houston city limits, so a citywide council vote on senior meal delivery and medical rides reaches Lake Houston area residents directly.
