Houston Public Media reports that Mayor John Whitmire’s administration has withdrawn a federal grant application tied to immigration law enforcement, and that the city applied for it without disclosing the application publicly.
The outlet has been tracking the application for several weeks. On September 15 it reported that Houston officials were considering applying for a grant tied to immigration enforcement, on September 21 that officials were still weighing it after a delay, and on October 1 that the city was not taking any action on a $150 million Justice Department application tied to immigration law enforcement. This site carried that October 1 development in Houston Is Not Taking Action on the $150 Million Justice Department Grant.
Kingwood sits inside Houston city limits, so city grant decisions and Houston Police Department policy apply to Kingwood residents.
